Blue Crosses

About the art

The process of creating this art piece in the new church began in 2002. In anticipation of an exciting new church building, the church council at St Edmund’s placed an advertisement in the
Church Times inviting artists to consider submitting ideas and designs for a stunning new piece of original art for the worship space.

Out of the 6 artists who submitted suggestions, Tomoya Yamaguchi was invited to complete the work.

Some 4 years later the work was completed, being launched on 15th June 2006.  The art was financed by congregation and friends of St Edmund’s and brings a significant piece of original art in this wonderful new building.

Tomoya has taken the images of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ and presented them in an exciting and striking way.

The two pictures are large on purpose. They dominate the worship space leaving no doubt that this is a Christian church.  The two images allow us to reflect on the suffering of Christ in crucifixion and the new life of Christ in resurrection.

Tomoya’s work invites us to engage with these pieces of art in a number of ways.

You can simply sit and look at them, noticing how the light plays against the metal
surrounding the pictures.

Or you can walk and stand beneath each picture, looking up at yourself in the mirror
above Christ’s head. You are then placed in the scene of crucifixion or resurrection.

At night the pictures are transformed as they are
bathed in blue light.
